CASTLELAND RC&D HELPS COORDINATE BSA SERVICE PROJECT
The Castleland RC&D Council, Inc. has been working with the Skyline Cooperative Weed
Management Area (CWMA) for over 4 years, helping to plan, organize and carry out a massive
Boy Scout-sponsored Order of the Arrow Tamarisk
removal and herbicide treatment project in the
Buckhorn Draw, around Joe’s Valley Reservoir, and
near Millsite Reservoir. The council acquired some
funds from the state legislature and SITLA to provide
chemicals and equipment for this project. They also
provided a report to the Utah Department of Ag & Food
after the project was completed.
The Utah project was one of five conducted on public
lands across the nation. From June 16 to June 20,
approximately 350 members of the Order of the Arrow
(OA) worked 8 hours per day cutting tamarisk.
Another 100 state, county, and federal employees
supported this work. OA members cut tamarisk plants
with pruners and handsaws while supporting personnel
applied Garlon 4 herbicide to the cut stumps to prevent
re-sprouting. Skyline CWMA members provided
chemical and equipment support with a boat at Joe’s
Valley reservoir for 2 days. CWMA members from
Carbon & Emery County provided chemical support at the base camp in the Buckhorn draw
with 6-wheeler ATV’s and also used “hand-can” sprayers to spray the plants after they were
cut by the scouts and agency personnel. RC&D Coordinator Wayne Urie is shown applying
flags in the cutting area of Buckhorn Draw.
When finished, 19.7 miles of riparian area (925 acres) had been treated on National Forest
lands, and 26.6 miles (12,925 acres) had been treated on Bureau of Land Management lands.
