INT. CAR -- DUSK
Looking out a car’s windshield. In the distance, the flare
of a sunset over a looming building. Close knit vehicles
The hand of a WOMAN, bracelets jangling, as she meticulously
flattens a spiral, lined sheet of paper on the car’s
dashboard. On top of that, she lays her pencil.
PULL BACK TO REVEAL:
The woman in the rear view mirror. She is in her mid-40s,
black hair, indeterminate emotions.
She notices: her lap. Shavings from the orange eraser of the
Furiously, with both hands, she attempts to dust the shavings
from her skirt.
At last, she pulls her fat black purse from the passenger
seat to her chest, and exits the car.
EXT. SHOPPING MALL -- DUSK
The woman weaves through the sea of cars in a parking lot.
Slowly, the building comes into view.
A shopping mall. It glows, as if on fire, bathed in the
TITLE CARD: “1982, Indiana” Then: “Sunday”
The woman crosses the inner drive and enters the mall through
a JCPenney store, passing a MOTHER, weighted by shopping
bags, with her CHILDREN.
INT. SHOPPING MALL (JCPENNEY) -- DUSK
The store. The woman passes TEENS in Juniors Clothing, past
WIVES in Cosmetics...
CLERKS and others notice the woman, but do not pay her much

The woman clutches her black purse to her chest as if it’s a
shield. She walks strangely, robotically.
INT. SHOPPING MALL (CONCOURSE) -- DUSK
The woman stops at the mouth of JCPenney and surveys the
mall’s main thoroughfare -- a “T” shape. The concourse is
large and wide, with two tiers of parallel stores. Ahead is
the longest stretch. To her left is a fountain with a small
cafe and chairs, most empty. Further on the right are
escalators. The mall is sparsely crowded at this late hour.
At last, the woman juts ahead as if shoved from behind.
She rises to the second level of stores. She rounds a
bannister and looks at the shoppers below.
