Embedding Analytics
within Applications
Executive Overview
• Explore the realm of Embedded Analytics within the scope of Business
Intelligence and specifically the integration of Microsoft Power BI through the
Microsoft Power Apps Utility.
• Utilizing Microsoft applications, provide comprehensive overview of creating a
Power BI report, making an app with Power Apps, and embedding it in Microsoft
Teams (see Appendix).
Research Question
• Overview Questions: What is Embedded Analytics? How does it work? And why
might it be useful to incorporate within a business or organization?
• Research Question: How can businesses utilize embedded analytics to increase
efficiency and broaden reach of analytics to business users?
• Investigate: Create Power BI dashboard, turn it into an app within the Power
Apps application, and integrate it into Microsoft Teams.
What is Embedded Analytics?
• According to Gartner1, Embedded Analytics is
"a digital workplace capability where data
analysis occurs within a user's natural
workflow, without the need to toggle to
another application."
• Embedded Analytics differs from Traditional BI
because it puts all the capabilities of Business
Intelligence directly within the applications on
which users already rely.2
The Foundation of Embedded Analytics
According to Decker4:
1. Integration – Enabling the rapid integration of multiple sources and large
volumes of data.
2. Synchronized Analysis – Analytics is available within the users familiar
business applications and for a wide range of scenarios.
1.
Embedding makes analytics available when and where needed, providing users a powerful experience.
3. Democratizing Analytics – Allowing a wide population of users to understand
and use analytics results in an easy to use and share interface.
Embedded Analytics Over Time
• The idea of embedding reports within an application is not a new thought.
• The idea has been around for as long as BI software existed, but it did not accelerate until 2000s4.
