Message from the Course Coordinator
Dear Students,
Welcome to ECEN2802 Advanced English for Science Students
This course has been developed based on extensive feedback from students and
teachers. The goal of this course is to provide you, the learner, with choice and
flexibility. You will notice the course allows considerable choice in what to learn,
where to learn and how to learn as well as giving you more choice in what kind of
language to concentrate on. Nevertheless, the course also provides structure which
enables teachers to guide and help you. This combination of structure and choice will
enable you to focus individually on those areas of learning English which need most
attention thus personalising your learning experience.
Personalising is important because each student in the faculty has different abilities
but also different needs in learning English. Clear examples of this are seen by
looking at the sorts of assignments different departments set and at the very different
kinds of jobs science faculty students take up on graduation (HKU statistics show that
less than half of you will end up working in science related jobs, for example). On
the other hand, some needs for English are quite similar for everyone, for example
many of you will want to take the IELTS test. So, personalising doesn’t mean
working alone, it means working towards you own goals with help, support and, if
you want, in cooperation with friends.
This small booklet is the only set of notes is the only thing that will be the same for
every student on the course. This is because when you make choices about your own
learning, the learning materials you need will be different from those needed by
everyone else in your class. To help you find the right resources we
