Biofuel
Due to the actions of its school superintendent and a U.S.D.A. Forest Service program, the Council School District in west
central Idaho has an energy-, dollar-, and pollution-saving, biomass heating system. The superintendent, Murray
Dalgleish, and the program, Fuel for Schools, brought an idea, the using of nearby forest wastes for fuel, to an area that
hadn’t needed to think about such energy alternatives because conventional resources were relatively cheap. Fuel for
Schools offers grants and advice about raising additional money to make a reality out of such ideas. See the article,
“Schools Look to Forests for Heating Fuel,” by Anne Wallace Allen, Associated Press, in the November 7, 2005, issue of
the ENN (Environmental News Network), at http://www.enn.com/today.html?id=9184 . See the Fuels for School website
at http://www.fuelsforschools.org/ ; it has information on how to begin a project at your school, frequently asked questions,
and much more.
Green and Efficient
The Anaheim Transportation Academy is for high school students from the Anaheim Union High School District working
towards careers in transportation. A group of its students worked on a project to test the hypothesis that golf carts fitted
with solar panels to charge batteries to run the carts use less grid power than golf carts whose batteries have to rely
entirely on the grid for recharging – 25.9% less. The students controlled for variables so this was, in terms of the scientific
method, a sound experiment. See the two-page pdf document, “Student Project Provides Green Power and Lowers
Costs for Anaheim Schools,” on the City of Anaheim website at
http://www.anaheim.net/utilities/adv_svc_prog/renew_energy/LMDel_Sol_Article0905.pdf .
