Charles Alexander Eastman is unique among Indian writers, having been raised
by his grandmother in the traditional ways of the Woodland Sioux. His early
experiences gave him thorough first-hand knowledge of the life-ways, language,
culture, and oral history of these Native People.
Leaving the Woodlands People at the age of 15, Eastman was educated at
Dartmouth and Boston University medical school, becoming a highly literate
physician and writer at a time when many Native storytellers were either entirely
acculturated (never lived the traditional life of their people) or were not literate.
Eastman’s personal experiences make these works an authentic record of the
times and ways of a culture fast fading into the dusts of time.
