Resource: Academic Festival
The inaugural Academic Festival at Marshall University will be held April 23 and 24, 2010, at
various locations across campus. This festival will provide an opportunity to present and share
Marshall faculty and students’ scholarly successes to alumni, the campus community, and
potential students. All visitors are welcome.
Dr. Karen Mitchell is a Professor in the Department of Mathemat-
ics. With the goal of strengthening math education statewide, Dr.
Mitchell designs innovative methods and curricula that help teach-
ers at all levels better prepare WV students in the subject. She
currently teaches Trigonometry, Math Materials and Methods, and
the special topics course The History of Mathematics for Teach-
ers. In addition, Dr. Mitchell spearheaded the committee that es-
tablished the upcoming Academic Festival at MU. More...
Dr. Karen Mitchell received the 2010 Distinguished Ser-
vice Award, also known as “The Chair” award, from the
West Virginia Council of Teachers of Mathematics. This
award recognizes and honors a math educator who has
persistently worked toward improving math education in
WV. Dr. Mitchell is a long-time advocate for K-12 edu-
cation in the state, making outreach her priority.
