VVS Laxman praises R Ashwin after his stunning show with
Veteran India spinner R Ashwin has been in a prolific form for
the last few months as he became the match-winner in one after another game. After
showing his spin magic in Australia, Ashwin did the same against the English batsmen. Along
with the debutant Axar Patel, the 34-year-old off-spinner has claimed the bulk of the
wickets as India secured a 3-1 series win and qualified for the inaugural World Test
Championship final where they will take on New Zealand.
However, Ashwin was named the man of the series after India beat England within three. He
claimed 32 wickets in eight innings and helped India win as well. After his heroics, former
India batsman VVS Laxman praised him, as he said that preparation is the key to his success.
Laxman also said that Ashwin is constantly reinventing himself who recently became the
fourth Indian bowler to pick up 400 Test wickets as well and the second-fastest to reach the
feat after Sri Lanka spin legend Muttiah Muralitharan.
"I think he's (Ashwin) a very intelligent person. When you're playing at the highest level,
then it's not only about your skill, it's about your preparation, your planning and execution is
so critical. So, he works out what are the weaknesses of the batsman. He plans those
dismissals and that's why I think he is reinventing himself," Laxman said on Star Sports show
"We saw recently in the Australia series how he (Ashwin) troubled someone as great as
Steve Smith and that's another thing that makes Ashwin or any champion player special,
that he wants to be the best and compete against the best," he further added.
Not only Laxman but former India opener Aakash Chopra too applauded Ashwin, citing that
he is one of the biggest match-winners India have ever produced.
However, India will play a five-match T20I series against England in Ahmedabad before it
shifted to Pune for the ODI series.
