ABSTRACT
The engineering and higher education in India is at present at cross-roads and a
number of initiatives are being put in place by HRD Ministry for effectively
regulating and coordinating the same for achieving all round development in the
country. Though we talk of high quality education being imparted in our
institutions, we still have a very small percentage of educational institutions having
been accredited for quality and performance by appropriate bodies among the ever
increasing number of private establishments in this area.
The biggest concerns are about maintenance of quality and standards in teaching
and keeping up with increasing competition in managing the resources and campus
culture suitable for achieving all-round development in acquisition of technical
skills and essential developments in personality and English writing and speaking
skills of students at various levels. At present the situation in India is not that bleak
but not very promising either.
Although access to education is increasing through an ever increasing number of
AICTE approved institutions in the private sector, it is well known that
maintenance of quality in teaching and imparting high technical skills is still a
challenge for many institutions in India. Excessive commercialism along with
greed and lack of quality consciousness are posing real threats to the achievement
of quality in technical education. An attempt will be made in this paper to present a
positive perspective about the possible increase in quality and competiveness
among Indian Institutions with the entry of foreign universities into the country.
