ABSTRACT: Due to prolonged progressive scouring effects on a fill slope of a
highway pavement, slope failure occurred along a stretch of the Addis Ababa
– Debre Markos International trunk Road causing longitudinal cracks within
the asphalt concrete and shear failure right through the pavement structure
to the upper part of the subgrade layers.
Due to stringent environmental and cost constraints, a relatively medium
term research regime was designed whereby comprehensive in-situ meas-
urements, monitoring, evaluation and assessment were undertaken in order
to characterize the behaviour and mode of progressive failure of the pave-
ment structure subjected to different scouring patterns, seasonal changes,
moisture-suction variations, and dynamic loading. A new sampling method is
applied in extruding composite pavement and subgrade layers for laboratory
testing.
The study introduces some new analytical methods of modelling consoli-
dation and deformation resistance. The OPMC retaining wall method is also
introduced.
