Statement by Ms. Faïza Kefi (Tunisia) on behalf of Electoral Group V(b)

Mr Chairman of the Interim Administration of Afghanistan,
Mr President of the General Conference of UNESCO,
Ms Chairperson of the Executive Board,
Mr Director-General of UNESCO,
Members of the Executive Board and Ambassadors,
Ladies and Gentlemen,
On behalf of the Arab group in UNESCO, and in my personal capacity, I am pleased to give a
warm welcome to H.E. Mr Hamid Karzai, Chairman of the Interim Administration of Afghanistan
and to the members of the Interim Administration, and to wish you all further success in the historic
and decisive mission that has been entrusted to you in order to achieve peace, stability and
prosperity for the fraternal people of Afghanistan.
Your presence in UNESCO House today, Mr Chairman and Ministers, is a testimonial to the
importance and priority you attach to education, culture and science in the search for peace, equality
and coexistence for all categories and groups of the people of Afghanistan in order to ensure the
best possible living conditions, welfare and security for that country, which for centuries has been a
meeting place for numerous civilizations and cultures.
We are following with interest, Mr Chairman, your tremendous efforts to rebuild the
infrastructure and design sound programmes in order to provide appropriate conditions under which
the people of Afghanistan may exercise their right to education, culture and information.
Just as we commend these efforts, we also express our satisfaction with the actions of the
Director-General of UNESCO, Mr Koïchiro Matsuura, to achieve the lofty objectives of the
Organization and to support just causes, and in particular the Palestinian cause. We have already
expressed our support for the UNESCO strategy for Afghanistan, which includes education for all
among its top priorities, in accordance with the objectives adopted by the Dakar Forum, and also for
