Speech Therapist Helps Children in 5 Different
Countries While Working From Home
SEPTEMBER 30, 2009 (Saskatoon, SK, Canada) Catie Scholz, a Speech-Language Pathologist from West
Virginia has done something no other Speech-Language Pathologists has ever done. In one week, Scholz
provided speech therapy to children in The U.S.A, Canada, New Zealand, Saudi Arabia, and the
Northern Marianas Islands – 5 different countries in five days. She is one of many Speech-Language
Pathologists who work with TinyEYE Therapy Services (http://www.TinyEYE.com), a company which
provides Speech-Language Pathologists to school districts all over the world through telepractice.
Telepractice is a delivery model that enables the Speech-Language Pathologist to provide therapy
remotely, using web-cameras, headsets, and software. Scholz maintains licensure in many regions to
allow her to work with students in multiple time zones. She states “On my Friday afternoons I am
working with a child in New Zealand who’s starting her Saturday morning – it is like doing therapy with
someone in the future.”
She credits TinyEYE as a way to grow her career in a way that works with her life, “I am grateful that
TinyEYE allows me to continue my career working with the school age population from the convenience
of my home. When I was an SLP in a huge public school, problems with my back and feet made it very
difficult to move around the schools and work with students. Now, everyone is literally just one click
away.”
According to the American Speech and Hearing Association (ASHA), 71% of Speech-Language
Pathologists feel there is lack of qualified SLPs in the school system
(http://www.asha.org/careers/recruitment/schools/shortages.htm). The shortage has created a need
for solutions that will help students receive therapy they are required to receive as per IDEA 2004
