1991 Baseball Hall of Famer Starred for Rangers, Cubs
Continental Baseball League’s Championship Trophy
Named After Fergie Jenkins—Series Starts August 21
Dallas, Texas; August 1, 2007 – Throughout his Hall of Fame baseball career, Ferguson “Fergie” Jenkins was
a picture of consistency, posting an unheard of six consecutive 20-win seasons, and seven times overall. Although he
never made it into a World Series game during his 19-year career that saw him win 284 games, Jenkins was inducted in
the Baseball Hall of Fame in 1991.
Today, he is getting his name associated in another way with a baseball championship series.
The Continental Baseball League announced plans for its upcoming league championship series, set for August
21-26, 2007, and said the independent league’s trophy will be named after the Jenkins, according to Ron Baron, CBL
president and CEO. Bob Ibach, who is the CBL’s director of baseball operations/communications, joined Baron in the
announcement. Ibach, who was with the Chicago Cubs for nine seasons and witnessed Jenkins 3000th strikeout in 1982 in
San Diego, said, “We are honored that our league championship trophy will bear the name of such a distinguished
baseball great as Fergie Jenkins.”
Jenkins, born in Canada, was recognized by his native country this past May with the Order of Canada Award.
Jenkins played for the Texas Rangers in 1974-75 and again from 1978-1981. He began his career with the Philadelphia
Phillies in 1965-66, then played for the Chicago Cubs from 1966-1973 and again in his final two seasons in the big
leagues from 1982-83. He also pitched for the Boston Red Sox in 1976-77.
“Having Fergie Jenkins’ name associated with our league trophy really adds prestige and stature to our first
championship series,” noted Baron. “Whatever team wins the title, that team will forever linked to one of the greatest
pitchers in major league
