Conservation on the Ground -
Conservation Education in
Lee County by Anne Miller, District Administrative Coordinator,
Lee County Field Office, Opelika, AL
The Lee County Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) and the Soil and Water Conservation
District (SWCD) participated in several activities to promote conservation education.
County Fair:
The Field Office educational booth won 4th place at the
Lee County Fair. The booth, entitled “This Land is
Your Land—Conserve, Preserve, and Protect,” was
designed and decorated by Earth Team Volunteers.
Adults attending the fair had the opportunity to register
for two books: “Plat Book of Lee County,” which was
contributed by the Lee County Soil and Water
Conservation District, and “Forest Plants of the
Southeast and Their Wildlife Uses,” a contribution of
Dr. James H. Miller, USDA-Forest Service, Southern
Research Station. The booth provided conservation
materials for inquisitive minds of all ages to learn
more about conserving natural resources.
The SWCD fair booth provided conservation
education opportunities for children of all ages.
Christmas Parade:
The Opelika Christmas Parade offered
another opportunity to promote
conservation education. “Be Earth
Angles—This Land is Your Land—
Conserve, Preserve, and Protect,” was the
theme; the float won first place in the
float division. Float riders, representing
District Supervisors, Earth Team
Volunteers, staff, and, of course, children,
all enjoyed a moment of holiday cheer
and helped raise the awareness of the
conservation assistance available in the
county.
The Opelika Christmas Parade was an ideal opportunity for
the Soil and Water Conservation District to promote
conservation activities.
Outdoor Education:
The Lee County Field Office provided assistance to the Loachapoka Elementary School in preparing an
application for a Resource Conservation and Development (RC&D) Grant. Grant funds were used to
enhance the Nature Trail, Wildlife Habi
