Under general direction, enforces the Municipal Code through legal representation of the City in
misdemeanor cases. Incumbent provides advice to police officers and City departments; reviews reports
for charging decisions, conducts case settlement negotiations, prepares cases for trial and tries cases in
This is a second level of a two-level series. It is distinguished from the first level, Assistant City Attorney I,
in that the worked performed by incumbents requires greater knowledge of civil litigation and government
process. At this level, the incumbents will provide legal advice to the various City Department Directors,
and, when necessary, advise the City Manager and City Council in Executive Sessions on civil litigation
matters. Incumbents will also be required to draft ordinances and prepare staff reports to the City Council.
The primary mission of all employees is to provide the citizens of the City of Kennewick with
the most efficient and effective service possible. Salaries are paid by the taxes, revenues,
and users fees collected from the citizens of Kennewick. Each employee is expected to treat
all people with the courtesy and respect due them at all times.
1. Prepares cases for court by reading police reports and records, contacting witnesses, reviewing other
evidence and determining their accuracy, reliability and legal sufficiency to pursue case. Plans legal
strategy to ensure compliance with state law.
2. Charges crimes and infractions, exercises discretion in the level and number of charges to file.
3. Represents the C
