A leader tends to demonstrate a task when he’s under a time
constraint, rather than to offer supportive directions. Don’t make
the habit of showing your team members’ the way to do things;
the best thing to do to teach them is to coach them and not to do
the task yourself. This can have a devastating effect to the team
member’s skill development and could make him dependent on
you in the long run.
Make sure to communicate the bad as well as the good
feedbacks. Let’s face it, admittedly it’s hard to hear criticism,
especially if they feel that they have done their best, however if
you emphasize the good things too, it will make taking the bad a
lot easier. After making comments and criticisms, provide clear
suggestions on how your team members can improve. Guide the
group by sharing your knowledge and experience instead of
spoon feeding them the solutions.
Make an effort to be positive, enthusiasm is contagious. If you’re
excited about a particular group project then it’s likely they will
feel a reason to feel the same way as well. As a leader the other
members of the team look to you for direction and guidance, so if
you notice that the group’s motivation and output level is not so
good, take time to conduct a meeting. Discuss what needs to be
changed and listen hard to what your team has to say. If verbally
admitting this is hard, it may be a good idea to get them to write
their comments on paper instead.
Give your group’s ideas the importance and value it deserves.
Consider each and every idea contributed by every team
