CalSTRS Names New General Counsel
Brian Bartow Appointed to Position from Assistant General Counsel

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif.--(EON: Enhanced Online News)--The California State Teachers’ Retirement
System (CalSTRS) today announced Brian J. Bartow as its new General Counsel. His role as lead attorney for the
nation’s second largest public pension fund is effective June 1, 2010.
As General Counsel, Bartow will provide operational and executive leadership at CalSTRS while serving as the chief
legal advisor to the Teachers’ Retirement Board, the pension fund’s governing body. In addition to guiding the fund’s
legal services team, he will be responsible for its compliance, community property and information security services
areas.
“Brian Bartow brings us not only strong legal skills, but an understanding of the strategic implications of our legal
decisions and a highly effective managerial style. Pension plans have extraordinary legal challenges in these times, and
Brian can clearly ensure that CalSTRS is prepared to address them,” said CalSTRS Chief Executive Officer Jack
Ehnes.

After graduating from UC Davis Law School in 1989, Bartow spent a decade in private practice before joining
public sector practice, most recently at the California Department of Social Services. Before that, he held high-level
legal positions at the California Department of Managed Health Care and California Department of Corporations.
