Six Books Published in English Attests to Macau’s Growing Cultural Capital
Macau, SAR, Dec. 14 – With the global financial meltdown as the backdrop, some
different kinds of “capital” have quietly but firmly taken a foothold in Macau. On the
evening of 17 December, the Association of Stories in Macao (ASM) is going to launch
6 new English-language books by local authors and translators at the Roof-top Bar of St.
Paul’s Corner, a welcoming sign of growing “cultural capital” necessary to Macau’s
long term internationalization and sustainability.
ASM is a non-profit organisation dedicated to the promotion of writing and
other artistic expression from and about Macao. Established in 2005, it has since
published a proud collection of 25 books, including this year’s new titles: I Roll the
Dice: contemporary Macao Poetry (edited by Christopher Kelen and Agnes Vong),
Story Circle Manual (by ASM), Pluck a Lotus for Pleasure (translated by Christopher
Kelen and Lili Han et al.), As from the Living Page (by Christopher Kelen), Glitter on
the Sketch (by Agnes Vong), and The Republic of the East (by John Mateer).
Among the new titles, the first major English-language Macau poetry anthology
I Roll the Dice stands out as a chorus of varied poetic voices from a cross-cultural
community of poets, who finally are telling their own truth in words the world can
