Save Ads/Art as PDF: Adobe Illustrator CS —Windows
1. Define a “Transparency Flattener Preset”.
Launch Adobe Illustrator CS
a. From the “Edit” pull-down menu, choose
“Transparency Flattener Presets...”.
b. Select (single-click on) “[High Resolution]” to select
this default preset as a base, then click “New...”.
Flattener Preset Name and Settings
c. Type in a name for the flattener preset. In the
example at right, the name has been set to
“Cadmus_Flat_Preset”.
d. Since it is likely that you want to preserve vector
art in your layout (prevent it from rasterizing),
position the setting on the “Raster/Vector Balance”
slider all the way at “Vectors” (100).
e. For “Line Art and Text Resolution” choose “2400” ppi.
f. For “Gradient and Mesh Resolution” leave the setting
at “300” ppi.
g. Click “OK”.
See the new Preset in the Presets List.
h. Click “OK”.

2. Define a “PDF Preset”.
a. From the “Edit” pull-down menu, choose
“PDF Presets...”.
b. Select (single-click on) “[Press]” to select this default
preset as a base, then click “New...”.

c. Type in a name for the PDF preset. In the
example at right, the name has been set to
“Cadmus_PDF_Preset”.
d. Select (single-click on) “General” in the list on the
left side of the window.
e. For “Compatibility” select “Acrobat 4 (PDF 1.3)”.
f. Check no boxes under “Options”.
PDF Preset - Compression
g. Select (single-click on) “Compression” in the list on
the left side of the window.
h. Under “Color Bitmap Images”:
Select “Do Not Downsample”.
Select “ZIP” for “Compression”, and “8-bit” for
“Image Quality”.
i. Under “Grayscale Bitmap Images”:
Select “Do Not Downsample”.
Select “ZIP” for “Compression”, and “8-bit” for
“Image Quality”.
j. Under “Monochrome Bitmap Images”:
Select “Do Not Downsample”.
