C.M.A. HOUSE - OTTAWA
Report to: Members of The Canadian Medical Association
From: Dr. R. D. Atkinson, Chairman, C.M.A. Building Committee
WE TRUST that you are both surprised and
pleased with the artist-s conception of the
new C.M.A. House that adorns the cover of this
issue of the Journal. Yes, we are definitely
moving the national headquarters of our Asso¬
ciation to Ottawa during the summer of 1969.
As Chairman of the Building Committee, it is
my privilege to report on the progress made to
date and to give you a preview of what the
building will look like.
During the next few days, you will receive
a personal letter from the Chairman of our
Finishing and Furnishing Fund Committee.Dr.
Normand J. Belliveau. Dr. Belliveau's Committee
has been charged with the responsibility of
raising $131,100 in order that we may suitably
finish and furnish the new home for organized
medicine in Canada. We hope in this report to
indicate why this fund-raising campaign is re¬
quired and to solicit your support. As Chairman
of the Building Committee and, more specifi¬
cally, as Chairman of the General Council and
of the Executive Committee, may I request your
thorough consideration and generous support?
Location
The building will be located at the corner of
Alta Vista Drive and Smyth Road. Ideally
located on a three-acre site purchased from the
National Capital Commission at the nominal
price of $75,000, the building will be surrounded
by N.C.C. nursery gardens and the landscaped
boulevard. A few minutes' drive from the air-
port, the new C.M.A. House will be en route
to, and within a 10-minute drive of, the Parlia¬
ment Buildings and downtown hotels.
Architecture
The architects have taken full advantage of
the well-treed boulevard location that has a
profusion
of natural
granite
outcrops and
boulders, and a natural watercourse that flows
through a small ravine at the rear of the
property. The basically two-storey structure,
providing over 43,000 square feet of floor
