Irvine Barclay Theatre and the OC Public Libraries are proud to announce the 2009
Adventures in Writing short story contest for children. This marks the eighth time
Irvine Barclay Theatre has collaborated with the OC Public Libraries in fostering the
creativity and imagination of young authors. The contest gives children a chance to
create their very own characters in their own fantastic story.
The contest is open to girls and boys, ages 8 -12 who are residents of Orange
County. Previous finalists are not eligible.
Using any of their favorite books as inspiration and applying creative aspects found
in literature (for example: character, plot, setting, rising action, conflict, resolution…),
young authors are invited to write an adventure story in which the main character’s
(or characters’) life takes an unexpected turn and as a result, the character learns a
valuable lesson. Each story should be in English and include a title.
The stories may be two to five typed pages (legible printing is acceptable). The story
must be double-spaced on plain white paper (one side only) or printed neatly on
lined 8 1/2 x 11 paper (one side only).
The contest will run from November 2 to January 29, 2010. All entries must be turned
in at one of OC Public Libraries' 33 branches by closing on January 29 or by email
to: firstname.lastname@example.org All entries must have a completed entry form
attached and include name, address, phone number, age, grade, and school. All
entries will become the property of Orange County Public Library.
