Elementary Restructuring Information
Dear Astoria School District Staff, Parents and Community Members:
On February 12, the Astoria School District Board of Directors voted to restructure our
elementary schools. The following configuration will be in place for the 2009-2010
Grades K-2 Astor Elementary
Lewis and Clark Elementary
Astoria Middle School
The rationale for this move included:
Elimination of a transition for all elementary schools, particularly Kindergarten
Continued dedication of staff collaboration within grade levels.
This grade level scenario will maximize the use of the buildings, allow adequate
staffing and permit specialists to serve all students in the elementary schools.
This scenario is financially feasible for our district.
The grade configuration process incorporated a management review (provided by
NWRESD), four community meetings and opportunities for staff feedback. The process
used was thorough, positive and provided opportunities for input and hopefully an
understanding of where the district is situated in regards to enrollment and funding.
School administrators and staff will immediately begin assembling Transition Teams to
ensure this move is as organized and smooth as possible. If your child’s grade placement
will be affected by the transition, you will receive communication from administrators
concerning the change.
