List of ceremonies
1. Vivaha Nischayam: Announcement of the engagement and the exchange of rings.
2. Pennu Kanil - the bride and groom meet.
3. Mothiram Mattal - The exchange of rings
Vivaha Nischayam: Announcement of the engagement and the exchange of rings.
This ceremony is usually divided into two parts; a) the 'Pennu Kanil' - the bride and groom meet
b) 'Mothiram Mattal' - the exchange of rings.
Pennu Kanil: The bride and groom meet.
After the horoscopes are matched, both families consent to the marriage. The couple then visits
the bride's home. This meeting may be a simple affair or a large celebration. In some
communities, a representative of the Nair Service Society (NSS) is always requested to attend,
in order to record the lineage of both the families and make a formal announcement in the NSS
newsletter about the alliance later.
Mothiram Mattal: The exchange of rings
The 'nila vilakku' (brass oil lamp) is lit and the couple exchange rings. Rings may also be
exchanged later at the wedding ceremony, if both the families so prefer.
