LIVING NATURALLY NATURAL LIGHT
All candles begin with wax, but now there are many waxes used which can be detrimental to our health. Most candles on the market are
petroleum-based products and scented or coloured candles are no more than disguised petrol fumes, setting the scene for highly polluted
indoor air, which can aggravate existing respiratory conditions such as asthma. Cheaply manufactured paraffin wax is made from
petroleum and is the most common wax for commerci al candle-making. Gel wax is petroleum turned into a jelly with a gelliant. The fumes
of these can contain formaldehyde, acrolein, acetaldehyde and unhealthy particles of soot.
Many wicks also contain a metal to keep the wick vertical; lead is now banned and instead zinc or tin is added.
Natural waxes are created from plants such as soya beans and beeswaxes are made by bees from nectar. This wax was always in
candle-making until the manufacture of paraffin became much cheaper. Beeswaxes are produced locally in New Zealand which
supports our local market and our beekeepers. Though soy waxes are imported from America and this creates food miles, meaning
increased transport costs and environmental pollution. Also increased soybean production in Brazil threatens Amazon
(see www.organicconsumers.org ).
For optimum health, burn natural and beeswax candles, which are clean- burning. Burn candles with braided wicks which contain no
metal. Burn hard wax candles. You can store candles in the fridge prior to burning to lengthen burning time, natural fridge preferred for a
