THE WORTHLESS CHECK UNIT
of the District Attorney's Office coordinates
the processing of worthless checks as
provided by Section 12-17-224 of the
Code of Alabama.
• CHECKLIST for Processing
WORTHLESS CHECKS that are handled
by the Worthless Check Unit:
(1) The check must have been
received in the County where the com-
plaint is made.
(2) Check must be dated less than
one year prior to obtaining warrant (We
request that you obtain a warrant within 90 days,
(3) Check must be stamped by the
bank as to why it was returned (Insuffi-
cient Funds, No Account, Account
(4) A ten (10) day
notice must be mailed
by Certified or Regis-
tered Mail, with a Return Receipt
Requested, to the address printed on the
instrument, or the address given at the time of
(5) The return receipt and the signed green
card should be brought, along with the check, when you wish to
obtain a warrant. If the letter itself is
returned, DO NOT OPEN IT, but bring it,
along with the check, when you wish to
obtain a warrant.
(6) Any party holding a worthless
check and giving notice in substantially similar
form to that provided by the Worthless
Check Unit shall be immune from civil or
criminal liability for the giving of such notice
and for proceeding under the forms of such
(7) Once charges are filed, they will not be
dismissed unless approved by the Check Unit Supervisor.

There is a $30.00 fee for withdrawing a warrant.
(8) If you accept payment, on a check you have turned over
to our office, you will automatically have to pay the $30.00 fee
and withdraw the warrant.
(9) All information requested on the Worthless Check
Information Sheet should be provided.
(10) All checks must be deposited in the
