This draft document is being provided to the Census Bureau=s Advisory Committees prior to
upcoming meetings. It is preliminary in nature and in the early stages of development. As such,
it is subject to revision. Our intent in making this working document available at this time is to
inform ongoing discussions related to the American Community Survey.
An Overview of Selected Population Profiles – A New Data Product Proposed for
the American Community Survey (ACS)
In the Federal Register notice from May, 2004, that described our planned changes to the
existing ACS data products, we included this short description of a new product that we
are now calling, Selected Population Profiles.
This new product would provide certain characteristics from the Tabular Profiles
for a specific race or ethnic group (e.g., Alaska Natives) or other population
subgroup (e.g., people ages 60 and over).
Many of the comments on our Federal Register notice were quite supportive of this
proposed new product. We have decided to incorporate Selected Population Profiles into
our annual data products. These profiles will deal with a variety of different populations,
including many of the smaller race, ethnic, and ancestry groups. Currently we are
proposing the creation of a Selected Population Profile for population groups such as:
Native and Foreign-born Populations,
People ages 65 and over,
People ages 60 and over, and
People at specified levels of poverty in the past 12 months.
