EDUCATION REFORM
INITIATIVE
Education Reform Initiative (ERI) was launched
within the Istanbul Policy Center at Sabanc›
University in 2003 with the aim of improving
education policy and decision making through
research, advocacy and monitoring.
ERI also attempts to serve as an example as to how policy dialogue
should be conducted within a contemporary democratic framework
by bringing together concerned civil society groups and the relevant
state agencies to catalyze an innovative collective thought process
for education reform policy.
Turkish education system has witnessed major reforms in the last
decade, including transition to eight-year compulsory education and
reform of the primary and secondary education curricula. Nevertheless,
equal access to quality education, through which all citizens can fulfill
their potential and realize their right to education remains yet to be
achieved. Turkey's aspirations such as transformation into an
information society, improved economic competitiveness, achieving
sustainable development, and membership to the European Union
(EU) make education reform an urgent necessity and priority.
Within this framework, ERI has defined the program areas and the
reform priorities under its scope of policy in accordance with its
commitment to the ideal of “quality education for all”.
