HOMETOWN CELEBRATION FOR THE FOURTH OF JULY
ANTHEM, AZ (July 4, 2005) — The GFWC Anthem Women’s Club facilitated a Pie
Bake Challenge and a Pie Eating Contest during the Anthem Independence Day
Celebration on July 3rd in Anthem Community Park.
The Pie Bake Challenge included two divisions; adult and junior (17 years and younger).
The adult division team winner was Kim Parker and Jodi Kersten for their Caramel Apple
Pecan Pie called Caramelized Temptation. Second place went to Linda Health for her
Lemon-Berry 4th of July Pie. The youth division winner was Emerald Sexton for her
Patriotic Peach Pie and Ashley Trecek won second place for her Chocolate Raspberry
Cheesecake Pie. Each winner received a $25 gift card.
“The creativity on the pies was fantastic,” said Dee Wright, Anthem Women’s Club co-
coordinator for the event. “Each pie was unique and managed to hold together well,
even in the heat. We really have some talented junior bakers to watch out for.” Other Pie
Bake Challenge judges were Phil Christian from Eccentric Gourmet and Cindy
MacArthur, event co-coordinator from the Anthem Women’s Club.
Among the many highlights of the day was the Pie Eating Contest amongst six
contestants; Eric Kilstrom – We Care in Anthem, Sam Crump – Anthem Rotary founder,
Emily Wright – Anthem Elementary School teacher, Donna Kublin – Past President
Anthem Women’s Club, Kevin Stapleton – Anthem Sheriff’s Posse and Jack LaRue –
Anthem’s own professional golfer.
Kevin Stapleton pulled out the win for the most pie eaten in four minutes. The contest
pies were generously donated by Rock Springs Café.
The GFWC Anthem Women’s Club also facilitated a raffle for the chance to throw a pie
in the face of Anthem Parks & Recreations Manager, John Sefton. Valerie Davis won the
raffle. The raffle proceeds will be split evenly between the Boy and Girl Scouts.
