CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
CONSTRUCTION PROJECT COORDINATOR
SUMMARY:
A Construction Project Coordinator position works under the general supervision of the Public Works
Engineering Director or other designee and receives technical advice and support from project managers
or engineers as needed. A position in this class coordinates the non-planning, non-engineering elements
of smaller assigned projects (such as parking lots, sidewalk contruction, driveway or median
modifications, building demolitions or similar) and, often under the direction of the project manager or
engineer, provides business and public-contact related administrative support during the construction
phases of large projects.
The basic purpose of the work is to monitor the progress of construction projects and facilitate the
construction contracting processes by gathering necessary information, preparing and revising billing,
monitoring project schedules, and negotiating and preparing small or pre-approved change orders and
related documents. Such work is done to promote contracting processes consistent with specifications
and the requirements of the City’s engineers and inspectors and applicable City, State and other
contruction standards and goals and to alert appropriate authorities when significant problems with the
approved schedule or budget may be developing. Further, a postion in this class performs some non-
technical, non-engineering support work related to the pre-construction, bidding, planning, budgeting and
scheduling phases of projects.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This class reflects responsible, specialized, procedural and administrative support work. In addition, the
work requires substantial public, governmental and staff contacts to gain and provide essential, and often
time-critical project information. Contacts include, in part, contractors, sub-contractors, inspectors,
