When Herod was king of Judea, there was a priest named Zechariah
who was serving in the Temple. Zechariah was married to Elizabeth.
They were both very righteous. They followed all of God’s commands.
They were both old, but had no children. They had prayed for
children, but had none.
One day Zechariah was chosen to go into the Holy Place of the
Temple to burn incense (it smelled good, like a scented candle). He
did this as part of his duties as a priest. While he was in the Holy
Place by himself, other people were outside praying to God. On this
particular day, an angel appeared next to the altar. Zechariah was
startled and scared when he saw the angel. The angel said, “Do not be
afraid. Your prayer has been heard. You and your wife Elizabeth will
have a son and you will name him John. You will have joy and
gladness. He will be great in the sight of the Lord. Many people will
turn to God because of him. He will prepare and make the people
ready before the Lord.”
Zechariah responded, “How can I be sure of this? I am an old man
and my wife is old, too.”
“I am Gabriel,” answered the angel. “God sent me to tell you this good
news. But now, you will be silent and not able to speak until this
happens because you would not believe.”
When finished with activities, return
all necessary items to bag and place
in the hallway for pickup.
Everyone outside was wondering what was taking Zechariah so long.
When he came out, he made signs with his hands, but was not able to
speak. It was just like Gabriel had said.
Zechariah finished his service at the Temple and returned home to his
