There was a man named Elimelech who lived in the town of
Bethlehem, in Judah, with his wife, Naomi, and their two sons,
Mahlon and Chilion. There was a famine in the land. (This means that
the crops produced little food for the farmers). Because of this,
Elimelech decided to move to another country, Moab, to escape the
famine. The country of Moab did not worship the LORD God. The
Bible does not tell us that Elimelech prayed to God to ask if he should
go, he just did it. God was probably not very happy that this family
moved to a country where the people did not love and worship Him.
Then, Elimelech died. Naomi was left in this foreign country with her
two sons. The Bible tells us that the two sons married women from
the area, Orpah and Ruth. They all lived there about ten years. Then,
the two sons, Mahlon and Chilion, also died. Neither of them had any
children. So, Naomi was left alone with her two daughtersinlaw and
no grandchildren. Naomi decided that she should go back home to
Bethlehem. She had heard that the LORD God had blessed them and
given them food. She decided to go home where she could worship
the LORDGod again.
At first both Orpah and Ruth said that they would go with Naomi to
Bethlehem. They would move with her and take care of her. Naomi

back. She told Naomi that she would go wherever Naomi would go.
Ruth promised to never leave Naomi. So the two of them moved to
