Case Study – BREEAM London car showroom
FlexiDry fast drying floor screed is playing its part in helping a new Honda car showroom
achieve the highest environmental standards in its sector.
The building, which is expected to achieve a “very good” or “excellent” rating under the
Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM),
features FlexiDry F2 – 14 day dry time formulation covering an underfloor heating
system. Situated on Edgware Road, Colindale in north London, the showroom will be
completed later in 2010.
In addition to underfloor heating with FlexiDry, the architects have used a range of
measures to improve the building's environmental performance, including ground source
heat pumps, rainwater harvesting and waste water recycling.
The new double height Colindale showroom will provide almost 700 sq metres of space
for displaying cars. An existing warehouse and workshop buildings on the site have been
refurbished to provide vehicle workshop, office and ancillary areas. Externally, ‘green’
planted screens between the parking areas provide an attractive backdrop to the
FlexiDry fast drying screed works in tandem with underfloor heating as it provides a
better thermal reaction to temperature change, making it perfect for such applications.
The screed provides a thermal mass for the heating to dissipate into, giving a consistent
temperature across an area with a gradual rise and fall over time. By providing the heat
to a room over such a large area, it is possible to use water at a lower temperature,
which reduces the heating load and thermal losses. FlexiDry floor screeds are 20-30%
more efficient as a thermal conductor a than an anhydrate screed.
