The Asia Institute for Political Economy
The School of Economics and Finance at the University of Hong Kong, The Fund For American Studies
and Georgetown University jointly mounted the inaugural Asia Institute for Political Economy in the
summer of 2002 in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region. The Asia Institute for Political
Economy’s interdisciplinary curriculum engages students in a thorough examination of the fundamental
concepts and theories of political economy and an advanced course in American Studies. The political
economy component examines the structure and functions of a market economy in the context of such
fundamental issues as competition, trade policy, fiscal and monetary policy, capital flows and foreign
investment, and international financial markets. The American Studies component allows students to
explore historical and cultural aspects of American society taught by guest lecturers from universities
including Georgetown University and The University of Hong Kong, other regional experts and business
leaders. The Institute is headed by Dr. Timothy D. Hau, Associate Professor of Economics at the
University of Hong Kong and Institute Director Charles Brockner. For more information or updates on the
