HOW and When CHEMTREC Was Formed
CHEMTREC is an initiative of the American Chemistry
Council (ACC) which represents the leading companies
engaged in the business of chemistry.
1918: Manufacturing Chemists Association (original
name of the American Chemistry Council) set out to
improve the safety of containers used to ship liquid
chemicals vital to the WW I war effort – a number of
railway accidents highlighted the need for improved
container safety. These improvements continued year
after year.
1969-70: MCA and US Department of Transportation met
to determine the best approach to a response and
reporting system for incidents involving chemicals in
transport
HOW and When CHEMTREC Was Formed
1971: MCA authorizes establishment of the CHEMical
TRansportation Emergency Center - CHEMTREC
1990: US DOT revises Hazardous Materials Regulations
to harmonize with international regulations and
strengthen rules on hazard communication. The
CHEMTREC model was instrumental in allowing the
requirement for phone number on shipping documents
1971-1999: CHEMTREC funded entirely by industry
through MCA and its successor, the Chemical
Manufacturers Association
1999: CMA Board of Directors instructs CHEMTREC to
adopt a cost-recovery funding model. Fees now
charged to shippers for the right to use the CHEMTREC
phone number on documents
