Unless you've been hiding under a rock or don't know what American Idol is, you've heard the name
Crystal Bowersox. This young, talented singer/songwriter with the soulful voice has a Janis Joplin
vibe. The 24 year old, Elliston, Ohio native, single mother is in the top 5 finalists in this seasons
American Idol and the judges have said she is head and shoulders above the competition.
Crystal began playing the guitar at 10 and began performing publicly shortly afterwards. She plays
guitar and harmonica but also learned piano as a child. Her early musical influences include Jewel,
Joni Mitchell, Sarah McLachlan, etc. Later influences include Counting Crows, Bonnie Rait, Tracy
Chapman, Janis Joplin, Aretha Franklin, Ray LaMontagne
Crystal was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes when she was in second grade. The disease caused her to
be hospitalized during the American Idol competition.
According to the News Messenger “Several of Crystal Bowersox's former teachers said they
recognized something special about the "American Idol" contestant when she was young.
Vicki Sievert, former music teacher at Rocky Ridge Elementary School, said Bowersox always had a
memorable singing voice.
"She had a lot of solos, but I was most impressed when, in third or fourth grade, she brought me a piece
that she had written herself and played it for me, and that's when I knew she was an exceptional talent,"
