Introduction:
“Coated Textiles” covers wide applications of
industrial textiles; many times it is referred as
“coated fabrics”. It is classified in Technical
Textiles. The construction of coated textiles
constitutes coating of polymeric film, monolayer
or multiple layers, self-adhesive and/or bonded on
the textile substrate (in forms- fibre, yarn, knitted
fabric, woven fabric and non-woven). The fabric
coating process produce continuous polymer film
that differentiates the porous chemical or polymer
film produced in conventional fabric finishing
process. Since the industrial revolution, demand
for coated fabrics increased many fold for
numerous applications such as-protective
clothing(sports, military & industrial), industrial and
functional applications in automobile, shipping and
marine, aerospace, nuclear reactors etc.
Why coating?
1. Aesthetics function
■ Pigment coating on denims, to achieve
different looks
2. Technical properties
■ Making a canvas waterproof
3. Function properties
■ Making a fabric hydrophobic on one side
while the other side remains absorbent.
It is also required as an intermediate for end uses
like lamination (of two fabrics to one another) on
flock for anchoring the tow / flock on the substrate.
Increasing exposure / utility of coated article to
use
■ Shoes – inner lining of the shoes is coated
■ Clothes – Labels on articles are coated
■ Furnishing – Artificial
