Objectives:
• To understand the writing process and use it to create personal, informational, and critical
essays.
• To increase confidence in the ability to communicate in writing.
• To read thoughtfully, critically, and creatively.
• To appreciate excellence in written expression and develop in interest in learning through
literature.
• To review basic grammatical and mechanical skills.
Assignments and Projects:
• Five essays with peer review: Description, Narration, Division-Classification,
Comparison-Contrast, Argumentation-Persuasion
• Readings from primary text as well as novel
• Journal entries on readings
• Questions on readings
• Creation of group study guide for novel

Quizzes and Exams:
• Quizzes on assigned readings
• Quizzes on grammar and punctuation
• Test on novel
Plagiarism:
Plagiarism includes using exact words, similar words, ideas, or thoughts and passing them off as
your own. A plagiarized paper will receive an F and may cause failure in the class. Disciplinary
actions will also occur.
Method of Evaluation:
Grades will be compiled using a point system. Points given here are approximate. The following
scale will be used:
