Preparer's Notice 98-1 Individual Income Tax.
Preparers of Mississippi Income Tax Returns
From: Bureau of Revenue
Subject: Tax Returns Prepared on a Computer
The Tax Commission has been in the process of implementing a new automated imaging/document
processing system. The new system requires more standardization of the returns than the old system
To assist in this standardization and improve communication with preparers of tax returns in
Mississippi, the Tax Commission will issue notices concerning the preparation and filing of tax
returns. The notices will contain information that hopefully will be of benefit to you and will help
ensure a better filing season for everyone. To be added to our mailing list, or to update your mailing
address, please send a written request to: Mississippi Tax Commission, Attention Ruth Sykes, Post
Office Box 1033, Jackson, MS 39215; or e-mail your request to Ruth at Rsykes@mstc.state.ms.us.
If you prefer, you may have the notices sent to an e-mail address instead of a physical mail address,
but please do not request both.
The following covers a number of items relating to the preparation and filing of individual income tax
returns. If you have questions that have not been answered or comments that you would like to
make, please send a written response or e-mail to Ruth. You should specify that yours is a response
to Preparer's Notice 98-1 in the subject line. We will consolidate the responses into another notice,
if one is needed.
If our instructions on return preparation and completion are followed, it will ensure a smoother filing
season for us and better service to your client. We appreciate your cooperation in assisting the
Mississippi Tax Commission in providing efficient service to the taxpayers of the State of Mississippi.
Mississippi accepts 3 types of returns - (1)Electronically Filed Returns - this is the preferred method,
(2)Handprint Returns - hand completed returns on forms that are pre-printed with drop out ink
