Dr. Chris Green was presented the Weatherford
Award for his non-fiction book “The Social Life of
Poetry: Appalachia, Race, and Radical Modernism.”
This award is bestowed on an author who captures
the unique characteristics of Appalachia. Dr.
Green’s book analyzes the role the Appalachian
region and its inhabitants played in defining race in
America during the 1930’s and 40’s.

The Celebration of Academics began with the presentation “Practical Project Management: Princi-
ples and Fundamentals,” by current Drinko Academy Fellow Dr. Eldon Larsen, and will conclude
this evening with “A Permanent State of Transition,” presented by Dr. David Wiley.

Resource: Research Proposal Mini-Grant Program
The Division of Science and Research at the Higher Education Policy Commission offers mini-
grants for the development of external research proposals to faculty members from WV bacca-
laureate institutions of higher education. The $5,000 mini-grants are specifically allocated for
researchers to designate uninterrupted time to focus on garnering external funds for research
within one year. Recipients are required to exempt themselves from other activities during
their grant period. Eight mini-grants were awarded for 2010, including three to the following
MU researchers: Drs. Derrick Kolling, Suzanne Strait, and Wendy Trzyna.
Dr. Eldon Larsen is a Professor of Engineering and the 2009-
