CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
CONSTRUCTION INSPECTOR I
SUMMARY:
Positions in this classification are responsible for a broad range of inspections directly related to
enforcement of protective codes, development regulations and/or contract requirements. Work
assignments require a knowledge of construction methods and materials, inspection techniques and
administrative procedures connected with the work. Inspectors are expected to fully understand how
a secession at one phase of construction will affect a later phase or a post construction situation such
as maintenance of the structure and often coordinate their activities with other staff members,
departments or division of the City. Employees visit premises, contact owners, developers, and
contractors and explain technical requirements or discrepancies. Inspectors are empowered to issue
stop orders when work does not comply with prescribed standards or approve contractor work on the
site. Inspectors check a variety of projects in the process of construction, alteration or repair for
compliance with engineering standards, safe construction practices, and other regulations or
ordinances relating to the safety, health, and welfare of the general public.

Reports to:
Senior Construction Inspector
Independently performs a broad range of inspections in accordance with established standards
regulations, under general supervision. Exercises independent judgment and decision-making in the
interpretation and resolution of sensitive situations in the field. These positions require good
communication skills and the ability to handle irate contractors and citizens diplomatically and
skillfully.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
The focus of this level is on inspections of a somewhat routine nature mainly in the area of small
public works projects involving clearing, grading, utility connections, drainage improvements and
