Genetics of hair colour :
Hair colour of a child is determined by the genes transmitted by the parents to offspring.
Both paternal and maternal genes contributed equally to determine the character in the
child. The main gene responsible is MC1R GENE which is passed on each copy by each
parent. Hence both mother and father are responsible for the characteristic feature of
hair found in the offspring. The major pigment responsible for colour is the melanin
pigment. The abundance of this melanin pigment characterizes the colour of the
individual. The combination of eumelanin and melanin pigment lead to the formation of
various shades of black and brown hair shades.
It also depend on the race of the individual. Hence the hair colour changes from region to
region, based on their genetic composition. At the time of birth the colour is determined
