SECTION 3 – HAZARD IDENTIFICATION
Emergency Overview: Clear, red solution. DANGER! Causes eye and skin irritation or burns. Harmful if swallowed or inhaled. Dried product residue can
act as an oxidizer. PRIMARY ROUTES OF ENTRY: Eye contact, skin contact, ingestion, and inhalation of product mist. TARGET ORGANS: Eye, skin,
mucous membranes, and blood.
Potential Health Effects
Eyes: Contact causes irritation or burns of the eye.
Skin: Contact causes irritation of the skin. If not removed promptly, burns may occur. Sodium nitrite and sodium tetraborate pentahydrate may be absorbed
through damaged skin in amounts that produce systemic toxicity similar to that produced by ingestion if the area of exposure and amount absorbed are large.
Borate absorption may cause a characteristic red inflamed rash followed by peeling typically on the palms, soles or buttocks.
Ingestion: Ingestion of this product may cause irritation or burns of the mucous membranes of the mouth, throat, esophagus, and stomach. This product
would be considered to be toxic by ingestion because as little as one gram of the product component, sodium nitrite, may be fatal to humans. Ingestion of
