CLASSIFICATION DESCRIPTION
ENGINEER II
SUMMARY:
Positions in this classification provide professional engineering support in a variety of
programs and projects. Work is related to activities in both private and public development
projects. Duties include reviewing designs and plans, gathering and compiling data, tracking
and coordinating projects, resolving complaints and the like. Employees ensure compliance
with federal, state, local and City regulations and codes and ensure that standards and
contractual provisions of the projects are met. Depending on the assignment, incumbents
may use computers or specialized automated systems, as tools to prepare documents, reports,
and to maintain, track and monitor inventories, or work with figures in making various
calculations, tabulations compilations. Work is performed in a combination of field and
office situations.
SCOPE:
Reports to: Engineering Manager
Independently performs a variety of professional engineering tasks within the
framework of established policies and guidelines and sound engineering practices.
DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
Engineer II positions perform journey level professional work that is distinguished from the
Engineer I class by the increased responsibility and technical knowledge required to perform
regular work assignments with minimal supervision.
WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is performed primarily indoors in an office setting. The work may require occasional
field visits potentially exposing the employee to inclement weather and the hazards of a
construction site.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
• Performs research related to the financing, technology, environmental impact and
legal issues of a program or project; prepares engineering analyses to assist in
effective planning of projects.
• Reviews, studies and analyzes environmental impact statements submitted by private
engineers for impact on community and compliance with local ordinances; prepares
