W e want peace, we want
peace, is a familiar slogan
heard in Liberia for the
past fifteen years. Liberians marched in
the streets of our nation’s capital, Mon-
rovia, in celebration of each peace ac-
cord signed by warring factions since
the December 24, 1989 rebel incursion
that led to deaths and total destruction;
leaving a once prosperous nation dev-
astated. As peace settles across our
land and with the election of Mrs. John-
son Sirleaf as Africa’s first female Presi-
dent, many Liberians are hoping that
this will be the time for peace and sta-
bility. As Liberians look forward to re-
building their country in this crucial
time, the incoming administration of
President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf must
make wise strategic alliances for the
benefit of the nation in the 21st century.
We must never limit our relations with
nations simply based on their politics,
ideology or culture, as perceived by
others. Real development in Liberia
includes rebuilding our infrastructure,
educational
institutions,
roads/
transportation services, and foremost,
investing in agriculture which should be
a priority, if we as a nation will be in
the
position
to
feed
ourselves.
We must recognize China as a partner
in our quest for development by estab-
lishing a clear policy as it
