Aims :
the courses will enable students to acquire:
reading skills including skimming and scanning.
writing skills including summarising, abstracting, notemaking.
the ability to pursue higher education through English.
a useful vocabulary of sufficient range.

Reading
on reading a text the student should be able to:
(i)
perceive its overall organization:
(ii)
discriminate between the main and the subordinate points and know how
they inter relate.
(iii) distinguish between the direct and the implied meaning.
(iv) discover the authors bias etc.
(v)
interpret tabular and diagrammatic presentation of information.
(vi)
examine critically advertisement and discard false and misleading
information and advertisements and speeches .

Listening-
by the end of the course, students should be able to:
(a)
use linguistic and non-linguistic features of the context as due to
understanding, interpreting what is heard (eg. cohesion devices,
keywords, intonation, gestures, back noises)
(b)
listen to a talk or conversation and understand the topic and main points.
(c)
listen for information required for a specific purpose, eg. in radio
broadecast, commentaries, airport and railway announcements.
(d)
distinguish main points from supporting details and relevant from
irrelevant information.
(e)
understand and interpret messages conveyed in person or by telephone.
(f)
understand and respond appropriately to directive language eg.
introduction advice, request and warning etc.
(g)
understand and interpret spontaneous spoken discourse in familiar
socical situation.
