100th Anniversary of the Alabama Center for Health Statistics
The Center for Health Statistics (originally the Bureau of Vital Statistics) in the Alabama Department of Public Health was established in
1908 when Alabama law required birth and death certificates to be filed centrally in the Bureau of Vital Statistics. During 2008, we will
publish several 100
Anniversary Fact Sheets that show how these vital events have been used to monitor public health trends and issues
in Alabama over the past 100 years. This introductory sheet is the first in the series.
The population of Alabama has more than
doubled in the 100 years since Alabama began
filing birth and death certificates. In 1909, the US
Census Bureau estimated the population was
2,214,050. The current estimate for the year 2007
shows 4,627,851 people living in Alabama.
Each year the Center for Health Statistics handles
thousands of vital events. Each birth, death,
marriage, and divorce shown in the charts below
represents at least one paper document handled
by the Center.
The actual number of births and deaths recorded
in Alabama from 1909 (the first full year records
were filed) until 2006 are shown in the chart
below. Births, shown by the red line, peaked in
the 1940’s while deaths, shown by the blue line
are currently at their highest level.
