1Official names of the USSR
247,549 km² were defined according to the Tartu Peace
Treaty in 1920 between Estonia and Russia. As of 2009,
2,323 km² of this territory remains within Russian borders
and is the focus of a dormant border dispute between the
two states.
The ceded areas include the Petseri County and the
boundary in the north of Lake Peipus as well as the lands
behind the city of Narva including Ivangorod (Jaanilinn).[1]
The Estonian Soviet Socialist Republic
(Estonian: Eesti Nõukogude Sotsialistlik
Vabariik; Russian: Эстонская Советская
Социалистическая Республика, Estonskaya
Sovetskaya Sotsalisticheskaya Respublika),
often abbreviated as Estonian SSR or
ESSR, was one of the 15 constituent repub-
lics of the Soviet Union.[2][3] Originally, it
was proclaimed in the territory of Republic of
Estonia on July 21, 1940 after its invasion
and occupation by the Soviet Union. This ter-
ritory was also occupied by Nazi Germany
from 1941 to 1944.
Most countries did not recognise the in-
corporation of Estonia de jure and only re-
cognised its Soviet government de facto or
not at all.[4][5][6] A number of these countries
continued to recognize Estonian diplomats
and consuls who still functioned in the name
