Elementary Pre/Post Lessons:
Pre lessons are designed to prepare your students for the Chosen presentation or performance. Taking time to
walk your students through a portion of the lesson or the lesson in its entirety will help to create the schema
necessary to maximize retention and allow for a more meaningful experience. The post lessons are available to
aid your students in debriefing or processing that which they have just experienced. They will provide your
students with opportunities to explore life in Uganda further and gain cultural understanding while increasing
literacy skills. On behalf of AOET and the Chosen, thank you for investing this time in your students. You are
preparing them for their future.

Anticipatory Set
time needed…20 minutes:
Select a book of your choice introducing students to the sights of Africa. There is a list of suggested readers at
the conclusion of both elementary lessons but feel free to use any book that will introduce students to central
and southern African cultures. Select pictures from the book that demonstrate the following similarities and
differences between the U.S. culture and African culture represented in the book: school, home, clothing, food,
etc. Have students chart the similarities and differences between “their world” and that shared from the book
using the chart below (expand the chart based on the number of pictures you’ve selected). Remember, one may
not be able to “smell” or “feel” every item from selected pictures and therefore, some cells in the table may
remain blank.
