Somehow you know. In the presence
of great things you are instinctively
aware of their significance.
Yet great things don't just happen
along. Important inventions, art and
design are all products of inspiration
and as such largely inexplicable. But
they are always facilitated by dogged
effort. By plain hard work, which will
always shine through, eager to make
its story known.
An Eilersen sofa is such a phenome-
non. Even if you are not into modern
furniture, you have to concede to the
concept of modern classics when
faced with an Eilersen.
Born of a different trade altogether,
present-day Eilersen sofas hail from
the workbench of young Niels
Eilersen, a Danish coachbuilder who
set up in 1895. A skilled craftsman, he
was among the first in Denmark to
use steam bent wood for his carriage
wheels. He was fascinated by the pro-
cedure, and by the time cars eventu-
ally ran horse-drawn carriages off the
road, Eilersen was already busy
making handmade wooden frames
for cars and buses.
Having once before outwitted the
industrial revolution, Niels Eilersen
took the opportunity when his facto-
ry burned to the ground in 1934. He
turned his attention to the produc-
tion of high-quality furniture, and he
was right.
The time was right, too. People were
ready for the luxury of excellence,
and Eilersen sofas were soon – as
they still are – a hot item. The fourth
Eilersen generation is now at the
helm, carrying on the proud tradi-
tions of Eilersen furniture and taking
the Eilersen trademark further than
anyone could have dreamed of.
On the other hand, who knows?
When meticulously finishing one of
his beautiful carriages, young Niels
Eilersen may have sensed that more
than one hundred years later people
would still want to “enjoy an eiler-
sen”.
Your senses will tell you our story
