On Monday, April 3rd 2006, the Student Senate of Lycoming College
met with over 40 of its student senators to discuss Mayor Wolf’s recently
proposed rental inspection ordinance for the City of Williamsport. The
senate unanimously voted to support the ordinance in cooperation with
Penn College and the Mayor.
Collectively, Penn College and Lycoming College’s student
government executive boards have been meeting to discuss the
importance of the ordinance in an effort to ensure the safety of all
Williamsport residents.
Currently, all of Lycoming College’s residential facilities undergo a
yearly inspection, ensuring that all buildings are suitable and up to code,
according to Mayor Wolf at her April 3rd meeting with the Student Senate.
This precautionary measure has proven to give residents a safer
living environment. A recent fire occurred at the residence of 14 Penn
College students who reside on West Fourth Street. The incident resulted
in no serious injuries, but evidence showed the facility had working smoke
detectors which provided the students with ample warning. This would be
an example of what the new ordinance would inspect for and in turn,
require landlords to provide safe living environments for not only students,
but city residents as well.
The Student Senate of Lycoming College is the elected voice of the
student body. An estimated 1500 students are represented through
Student Senate a majority of which reside within its residential facilities.
